Biography

Favorite food/recipe abroad?

One of my favorite foods from abroad was smørrebrød, which is a traditional Danish open-faced sandwich. For my smørrebrød, I would use dark rye bread (rugbrød), add a bit of sea salt and olive oil. Then, depending on what I had in my fridge, I would add toppings like heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, or mushrooms.

Favorite course abroad?

My favorite course abroad was Postcolonial Europe: Narratives, Nationalism, and Race because of the experiential facet of the course. For example, we critically analyzed current museum exhibitions in Denmark and then developed ‘interventions’ that worked to combat dominant narratives around topics like coloniality and justice.

What was one of your most meaningful experiences while studying abroad?

One of my most meaningful experiences abroad was traveling to Palermo, Sicily, with my classmates in the course Fleeing Across Borders: International Refugee Law, where we were able to learn first-hand about experiences navigating the Italian asylum system and compare and contrast that with the Danish asylum system. We met so many incredible nonprofit leaders, migrants from such diverse backgrounds, and had productive conversations about asylum law reform.

What did you miss about Brown while you were abroad?

As much as I loved trying so many different cuisines (and especially the freshness of the local Danish food), I missed the food scene of Providence. I especially missed Champa, Persimmon, and Palo.

What is one “historical treasure” of Copenhagen?

I lived in Frederiksberg, which is outside the city center of Copenhagen, and I truly fell in love with my neighborhood. Frederiksberg has so many vast green spaces (like the Frederiksberg Have!) that I found really grounding after a long day, to hang out with friends, and to exercise.
